What We Do
The work of Orbit31 Hub aims to help build safer communities by connecting knowledge and ideas with the people and organizations that can put them into practice. This takes shape through three interconnected areas:OutreachBringing together research and expertise with communities, organizations, and professionals through collaboration, public talks, community engagement, and other knowledge mobilization activities.Research-Based InsightDrawing on research, analysis, and subject-matter expertise to provide clear, useful insights into complex issues and support informed decisions.TrainingConducting training and professional learning activities that mobilize knowledge and research within workplaces and professional settings through talks, workshops, presentations, and other engagement formats.
Our Focus
Orbit31 Hub is focused on helping build safer communities by supporting understanding of crime, criminal justice, and public safety issues and informing practices and policies aimed at addressing them. The emphasis is on connecting knowledge, ideas, and research with relevant organizations and people.Collaboration is critical to this effort, particularly through the creation of opportunities for researchers, professionals, practitioners, community groups, and other partners to contribute, exchange, and apply different perspectives and forms of knowledge. The diversity of venues, formats, and projects through which knowledge can be mobilized, shared, and put into practice is something Orbit31 Hub recognizes and embraces. Identifying what organizations and communities need helps determine appropriate forms of knowledge sharing and research-based insight.
Community Talk Series
Orbit31 Hub develops talk series to mobilize knowledge within communities around critical issues that affect them. Each series brings together relevant community actors to mobilize knowledge among people and groups who can use it to help build safer communities.Community CollaboratorsThe subject matter of knowledge mobilization initiatives often aligns with the interests and activities of organizations and groups already doing important work in communities. Orbit31 Hub invites these actors to join forces as community collaborators, participating in ways that complement the initiatives and enhance their impact.Community HostsCommunities have key organizations and groups that already play an important role in bringing people together and providing services and resources. Orbit31 Hub identifies community actors whose work connects them with people who could benefit from our initiatives and invites them to host knowledge mobilization activities.Community SponsorsSocially responsible organizations, groups, and individuals play an important role in strengthening communities by supporting initiatives that contribute to their well-being and safety. Orbit31 Hub seeks to connect with these actors and invite them to become initiative sponsors, providing financial support to make knowledge mobilization activities possible.Upcoming Talk Series
Scheduled for Fall 2026:
Understanding the Human Element of Online Scams*Online scams are constantly changing. New technologies create new opportunities for offenders, and rapid developments in artificial intelligence are making it increasingly difficult for people to keep up with new forms of deception. This series focuses instead on something that remains much more constant: the human factor. Rather than trying to keep up with every new scam, the talks explore the human vulnerabilities and decision-making processes that make manipulation possible.Understanding the human element can help people recognize when they are being manipulated, even as the technologies and scams around them continue to change.
